Mbappe China apology comes after the France captain sparked major anger with remarks about a meme linking him to Mao Zedong. Kylian Mbappe, the Real Madrid star and France captain, issued a public statement on Tuesday to calm the storm. Chinese brands quickly cut ties with him, showing how fast celebrities can lose ground in one of the world’s biggest markets.
In a recent interview Mbappe reacted to a photoshopped image of his face on another person’s body. He called it the funniest meme he had seen and referred to the man as “some guy – I think he’s a Chinese dictator.” The comment was widely understood as a reference to Mao Zedong, the founding leader of modern China.
Mbappe later said his words were ill-judged. “I apologise to everyone my words have upset. This was absolutely not my intention,” he stated. He added that he holds deep respect for the Chinese people and their history and feels sincerely sorry.
In China, jokes or satire about Mao remain a strong social taboo. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson warned that any words hurting the feelings of the Chinese people would face joint opposition. Several major Chinese companies, including dairy giants Mengniu and Shanghai Milkground plus Eastroc Beverage, immediately ended all cooperation with Mbappe. They declared zero tolerance for anything that damages national pride.
Chinese state television stopped broadcasting LaLiga matches involving Mbappe and removed his advertisements. Spain’s LaLiga president Javier Tebas also apologised, saying the organisation deeply regretted the discomfort caused in China and was working to repair the relationship.
Sports marketing experts noted that athletes today act as their own media platforms. Teams must train them carefully, especially when dealing with sensitive markets like China. Past cases involving brands such as Dolce & Gabbana and the NBA show how quickly public anger can turn into commercial losses.
Many Chinese social media users rejected the apology at first. Some said Mbappe only apologised because he feared losing money, not because he truly understood the offence. State media outlets condemned the original remarks without repeating them and called for genuine reflection from Mbappe, Real Madrid and LaLiga.
The episode serves as a clear reminder that respect remains non-negotiable when working with Chinese partners and fans. Mbappe’s swift statement aims to limit further damage, yet the full commercial impact is still unfolding.
