After months of intense fighting that began in late February, US Iran Talks are once again moving forward through indirect channels. Officials from both sides spoke separately with mediators on Monday in a fresh attempt to bring the seven month conflict to a close. The focus of these discussions is an updated version of the seven day proposal that Iran shared last week during the United Nations General Assembly.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stayed in New York after the assembly and made clear that Tehran is waiting for a formal American response. He stated that Iran has already offered a clear path toward peace and expects answers on both the ceasefire terms and the conditions needed to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iranian officials, any reopening of the waterway depends on the United States ending its blockade, stopping strikes, and unfreezing Iranian assets.
The war has already claimed thousands of lives and disrupted global oil markets by restricting key shipping routes. Previous ceasefire efforts in April and June briefly raised hopes but collapsed soon after they were announced. Iran’s latest plan calls for an immediate halt to hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, the release of frozen Iranian funds, the removal of oil sanctions, and the lifting of the American naval blockade. In return, Iran would allow tankers to pass freely through the Strait of Hormuz and reopen talks on its nuclear program, including the highly enriched uranium that has long been a point of concern.
President Donald Trump confirmed that American officials had spoken with mediators but rejected the original Iranian proposal. He argued that economic pressure is pushing Tehran to seek a quick deal. At the same time, he indicated that further conversations are expected this week. Iranian officials note that no official rejection has been delivered through mediators and say they are still waiting for Washington’s definitive position before deciding their next moves.
Both sides continue to stress that only a negotiated solution can break the current deadlock. With mediators actively involved and US Iran Talks scheduled to continue, the coming days may determine whether the latest proposal can finally open the door to a lasting pause in the fighting and the restoration of vital maritime routes.
