US and Iran Clash in Strait of Hormuz Despite Ceasefire

Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated again on Thursday as both sides exchanged fire in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the most serious challenge yet to their fragile month-long ceasefire. The incident has raised fresh concerns about stability in one of the world’s most critical energy waterways.

According to Iranian military sources, the US targeted two ships entering the strait and carried out strikes on Iranian territory, including civilian areas on Qeshm Island and coastal regions near Bandar Khamir Sirik. In response, Iran said it launched attacks on US military vessels using missiles, drones, and small boats. Iranian state media later reported that the situation returned to normal after several hours of exchanges.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that Iran targeted three American Navy destroyers, but stated that none of its assets were hit. The US responded by striking Iranian missile and drone sites. CENTCOM emphasized that it does not seek further escalation but remains ready to protect American forces.

President Donald Trump downplayed the incident while speaking to an ABC reporter. He insisted the ceasefire is still in effect and described the exchange as “just a love tap.”

This latest US Iran clash comes as Washington awaits Tehran’s response to a new American proposal aimed at ending the conflict. However, the proposal leaves major issues — especially Iran’s nuclear programme and full reopening of the strait — unresolved for now. The Strait of Hormuz handles nearly one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies, making any disruption highly significant for world energy markets.

Both sides have had occasional exchanges since the ceasefire began on April 7. This incident highlights how fragile the truce remains. Meanwhile, the US has imposed new sanctions on Iraqi officials and militia leaders accused of supporting Iran.

The situation continues to evolve, with both countries carefully watching each other’s next moves in this high-stakes standoff
