US President Donald Trump announced a proposed three day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine that is expected to take place from May 9 to May 11. The temporary truce is intended to mark the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in World War Two and could become a major step toward reducing tensions in the ongoing conflict.
Trump shared the announcement through his social media platform, saying that the ceasefire would include a complete halt to military operations and a planned exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side. He described the development as a hopeful sign that the deadly war may finally move closer to an end after years of violence and destruction.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had earlier announced a separate ceasefire linked to Russia’s World War Two commemorations in Moscow’s Red Square. However, Ukraine responded by proposing an unlimited ceasefire beginning earlier in the week and called on Russia to fully cooperate.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine remains highly complicated as peace negotiations continue to face serious obstacles. One of the biggest disagreements involves the eastern Donetsk region, where Moscow wants Ukrainian troops to withdraw from areas currently under Kyiv’s control. Ukraine has strongly rejected those demands and insists it will not surrender territory.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov recently traveled to Miami for fresh discussions with American officials in an effort to revive stalled peace talks. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, both Russia and Ukraine continue accusing each other of breaking previous ceasefire agreements.
International observers believe the latest proposal could either open the door for meaningful negotiations or become another short lived pause in a war that has deeply affected global politics, energy markets, and regional security across Europe.
