Reports of abuse at a Texas immigration detention center have sparked renewed concern after Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) released a detailed report based on interviews with detainees. The investigation focuses on Camp East Montana, an ICE detention facility located at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
According to the report, detainees described physical assaults, poor nutrition, unsanitary living conditions, and limited access to medical care. Many also claimed they were prevented from contacting their families and legal representatives, raising concerns about their treatment while in custody. Rights groups argue that these conditions violate both United States and international human rights standards.
The investigation is based on interviews with 80 detainees, many of whom shared personal accounts of hardship. One Honduran detainee reportedly described experiencing depression and suicidal thoughts after spending several months inside the facility. The report suggests that the overall environment has had a serious impact on detainees’ physical and mental well being.
The US Department of Homeland Security, which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), strongly rejected the allegations. Officials stated that reports of abuse are false, insisting that detainees receive proper meals, clean water, medical treatment, and opportunities to communicate with both family members and legal counsel. The department also maintained that the agency follows established detention standards and takes the safety of detainees seriously.
Camp East Montana has faced criticism before. A recent government watchdog report alleged failures in documenting the use of force, delays in providing medication to seriously ill detainees, and wasteful spending linked to emergency contracts. These findings have intensified calls for increased oversight of immigration detention facilities.
The controversy comes as President Donald Trump’s immigration policies continue to draw criticism from human rights organizations. Advocacy groups argue that the administration’s immigration crackdown has created fear among immigrant communities and raised concerns about due process and racial profiling. Meanwhile, the administration says its enforcement efforts are intended to strengthen national security and improve border control.
