The Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) has announced plans to hold nationwide rallies on August 5 to mark the anniversary of the arrest of party founder and former prime minister Imran Khan. The decision was made during a meeting of the party’s parliamentary members, where leaders also discussed the country’s overall political situation.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said that the party had unanimously agreed to organize peaceful rallies across Pakistan. He stated that August 5 holds significant importance for PTI supporters because it marks the day when Imran Khan was arrested in 2023 following his conviction in the state gifts case.
Barrister Gohar strongly criticized the continued imprisonment of Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi, calling their detention unjust. He added that the party has pursued legal remedies through the courts but is still awaiting decisions on several appeals.
The PTI chairman also revealed that the party’s political committee and the opposition alliance would soon announce a joint strategy regarding the upcoming movement. He hinted that this year’s protest campaign would be different in nature, although he did not disclose specific details.
Meanwhile, Aleema Khan, the sister of Imran Khan, recently urged party workers to intensify efforts for the former premier’s release. Addressing supporters in Lower Dir, she encouraged workers to remain united and ensure that party lawmakers actively participate in the planned anti government campaign.
PTI has consistently expressed concern over Imran Khan’s health during his imprisonment. Last month, he was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a scheduled eye treatment, where doctors administered his fifth intravitreal injection. According to medical reports, the former prime minister is receiving treatment for Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO), a serious eye condition that can affect vision and is commonly linked to conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease.
The party maintains that it will continue its political and legal efforts while mobilizing supporters across the country ahead of the planned August 5 rallies.
