The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially approved a new format for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, introducing significant changes that could increase the chances of another Pakistan India clash during the tournament. The revised structure aims to make the competition more competitive while also creating more meaningful matches throughout the event.

The 2027 World Cup will still feature 14 teams, but the tournament will begin with a preliminary qualifying stage. The three lowest ranked qualifying teams will compete in this opening round, with only one side advancing to the main tournament. This change reduces the main competition to 12 teams, divided into two groups of six.

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a Super Seven stage, replacing the previous Super Six format. Teams progressing from the group stage will carry points forward into the next phase, creating more high stakes encounters before the semi finals. Unlike some previous editions, the tournament will not include quarter finals, meaning the race for a place in the last four will become even more intense.

For cricket fans, the most exciting outcome of the new format is the increased possibility of an additional Pakistan India clash. Since both teams could meet in the group stage and again in the Super Seven, supporters may witness two high profile encounters in the same World Cup if both sides qualify.

The rivalry between Pakistan and India remains the biggest attraction in international cricket. Due to ongoing political tensions, the two nations no longer play bilateral series and only face each other during ICC tournaments or major continental events. Their last bilateral series took place in 2006, making every ICC meeting one of the most watched sporting events worldwide.

The ICC also confirmed changes for the 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup. While the tournament will continue with 20 teams, a new Super 10 stage will replace the previous format. The top two teams will advance directly to the semi finals, while additional knockout matches will determine the remaining semi final spots, adding even more excitement to the competition.
