Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has called for the establishment of a high powered commission to investigate the recent unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Addressing party leaders and workers in Muzaffarabad, Bilawal stressed that the investigation should be conducted strictly in accordance with state laws to uncover the facts behind the recent violence.
The PPP chairman described the situation in AJK as a matter of national concern, saying it affects not only the people of Kashmir but also every Pakistani. His remarks come as political tensions continue to rise ahead of the July 27 Legislative Assembly elections, following protests and sit ins in different parts of the region.
Bilawal urged all political parties, protest groups, and public representatives to act responsibly and avoid statements that could further inflame tensions. He emphasized the importance of restoring peace, stability, and public confidence while encouraging dialogue instead of confrontation.
Speaking on national security, Bilawal stated that the Pakistan Armed Forces remain a red line for the PPP. He said any anti state narrative or remarks directed against the military were unacceptable and should not be encouraged. At the same time, he added that offensive language against the people of Kashmir was equally unacceptable, stressing that their dignity and democratic rights must always be respected.
The former foreign minister also rejected the use of violence to achieve political objectives, saying constitutional amendments cannot be imposed through sit ins, protests, or force. According to him, democratic issues should always be resolved through constitutional and legal processes.
Responding to concerns raised by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee, Bilawal proposed forming a Truth and Reconciliation Commission with the agreement of all stakeholders. He said the commission should recommend practical solutions for lasting peace and help rebuild public trust.
Bilawal further appealed for the suspension of planned protests if the commission is established and urged authorities to avoid further escalation while the investigation proceeds. He also reaffirmed that refugees’ voting rights can be protected through democratic and constitutional mechanisms without creating instability in the region.
