Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing for high level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, aiming to highlight the growing partnership between Russia and China following US President Donald Trump’s recent visit to China. The visit comes at a time when Moscow is facing increasing diplomatic pressure from Western countries over the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Putin landed at Beijing Capital International Airport late Tuesday night and was welcomed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi along with an official ceremony and military band. The arrival closely resembled the reception given to Trump just days earlier, showing Beijing’s effort to maintain strong relations with both global powers.
During the visit, Xi and Putin are expected to discuss ways to strengthen their strategic partnership, expand trade cooperation, and address key international and regional issues. One major topic likely to dominate discussions is the proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, a massive energy project that would transport Russian natural gas to China through Mongolia.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has become increasingly dependent on Beijing for economic support. China has emerged as one of the biggest buyers of Russian oil and energy supplies, helping Russia counter Western sanctions. Putin described relations with China as reaching an “unprecedented level” and praised the growing trade ties between both nations.
Chinese officials also highlighted the long standing friendship between the two countries as they marked 30 years of strategic cooperation. Analysts believe the visit is intended to send a clear message that Russia and China remain closely aligned despite changing global politics and Trump’s recent diplomacy with Beijing.
Experts say both leaders are expected to sign joint agreements after their talks, particularly in the energy sector, where China continues to seek stable oil and gas supplies while Russia looks for stronger economic partnerships in Asia.
