The Karachi weather update from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) suggests a slight reprieve as temperatures are expected to stay below 40°C over the next 24 hours. While the mercury surged to a record 44.1°C on Monday, marking the hottest day of the year so far, the upcoming forecast predicts a range between 37°C and 39°C. Despite this marginal dip, the combination of 48% humidity and calm winds continues to create challenging conditions for residents across the port city.
The intensity of the recent heatwave has already had tragic consequences. Rescue officials confirmed that at least eight people died in Karachi on Monday due to heat-related complications. Bodies were recovered from various locations, including Manghopir, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, and Boat Basin, while others succumbed to the heat after being rushed to hospitals from areas like Defence Phase 8 and Surjani Town. These incidents highlight the critical importance of following safety protocols during extreme weather shifts.
Medical experts are urging citizens to prioritize their health by limiting outdoor activity, particularly during the peak sun hours of 11 am to 3 pm. To combat heat-related stress, staying well-hydrated is essential. Health professionals also recommend wearing light-colored, loose clothing and ensuring the head is covered when stepping outside to avoid direct sun exposure.
In addition to heat safety, there is a growing concern regarding stomach-related issues. Residents are advised to avoid street food and unhygienic beverages, opting instead for boiled water. As the weather system remains dry, taking these basic precautions can be life-saving. The PMD will continue to monitor the situation, but for now, the city remains on high alert as it navigates this intense summer season.
