Pakistan has strongly warned India against any attempt to stop the flow of water to the country, stating that such a move would be considered an act of war and would be met with all necessary measures to protect national interests.

The warning came after Indian Water Minister CR Patil stated that India was working to ensure that not a single drop of water reaches Pakistan. Responding to the statement, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said that any effort to block water would violate international obligations and the Indus Waters Treaty, which has governed water sharing between the two countries for decades.

According to Andrabi, Pakistan depends heavily on the rivers covered under the treaty, and millions of people rely on these water resources for agriculture, industry, and daily life. He emphasized that Pakistan would take every possible step to protect its economy, national interests, and the well being of its population.

The Foreign Office also urged India to act responsibly, fulfill its international commitments, and avoid actions that could further increase tensions in the region. Pakistan believes that disrupting water supplies would not only harm bilateral relations but could also create serious humanitarian and economic consequences.

The issue comes amid continued tensions between the two neighboring countries. India announced the suspension of its participation in the Indus Waters Treaty in 2025 following accusations related to a deadly attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan firmly rejected those allegations.

During the briefing, Andrabi also addressed comments regarding Azad Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the region operates under a democratic and constitutional framework. He contrasted this with the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which Pakistan regards as a disputed territory.

The spokesperson further commented on a recent SIPRI report, saying it supported Pakistan’s concerns about India’s growing strategic military capabilities. While stressing that Pakistan does not seek an arms race, he noted that the country will continue taking necessary measures to maintain strategic stability, strengthen national security, and deter any potential aggression.
