The European Union has warned airlines not to impose additional fuel surcharges on passengers after tickets have already been purchased. The warning comes as airlines across Europe face rising fuel costs linked to growing tensions and conflict in the Middle East, which have pushed global energy prices higher.
EU officials stated that airlines are free to adjust ticket prices before customers complete a booking. However, once a passenger has purchased a ticket, companies cannot later demand extra payments because of increased fuel expenses. According to EU spokesperson Anna Kaisa Itkonen, adding new fuel charges after a sale may violate European consumer protection laws and could be considered an unfair commercial practice.
The European Commission also released a document explaining that ticket prices advertised at the time of booking must remain final. Airlines are not allowed to include hidden conditions that let them raise prices later simply because fuel costs became more expensive than expected. Officials stressed that customers deserve pricing transparency and protection from unexpected travel costs.
There is only one limited exception involving package holidays. In those cases, travel companies may increase prices if the contract clearly mentioned the possibility of fuel related cost changes. Even then, increases are restricted to 8%. If the price rises above that level, customers have the right to cancel their booking instead of accepting the extra charge.
The issue gained attention after Spanish low cost airline Volotea faced criticism in France for asking passengers to pay additional fuel fees due to the energy crisis. French authorities have launched an investigation into the matter. Despite the criticism, the airline defended its decision, saying legal experts confirmed the temporary surcharge system was lawful and transparent.
The latest EU warning highlights growing concern about rising travel costs and the need to protect airline passengers during periods of global economic uncertainty.
