Belgium produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the FIFA World Cup, defeating Senegal 3 to 2 after extra time to secure a place in the Round of 16. The thrilling encounter in Seattle saw the Belgian side recover from a two goal deficit before Youri Tielemans scored the winning penalty in the 125th minute, sealing a memorable victory.
Senegal looked in complete control for much of the match and appeared ready to record their first ever win in a World Cup knockout fixture. Habib Diarra opened the scoring after reacting quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area. Shortly after the break, Ismaila Sarr doubled Senegal’s advantage with a composed finish following a perfectly timed long pass.
Belgium struggled to create clear opportunities during the first half despite enjoying possession. Goalkeeper Mory Diaw made several excellent saves to frustrate the European side and kept Senegal in command as the match entered its closing stages.
Everything changed when Belgium introduced Romelu Lukaku from the bench. The experienced striker reduced the deficit in the 86th minute with a clinical finish from a cross by Thomas Meunier. Just three minutes later, Youri Tielemans headed home the equaliser after Diaw failed to clear a dangerous delivery, forcing the match into extra time.
Both teams pushed hard for a winner, creating several chances as fatigue began to take its toll. Belgium substitute Dodi Lukebakio came close with an effort that struck the crossbar, while Senegal defended bravely to keep the score level.
The decisive moment arrived in the final seconds of extra time when Tielemans was brought down inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded Belgium a penalty. Tielemans confidently converted the spot kick, completing an incredible comeback and sending Belgium into the World Cup last 16.
Belgium will now prepare for a possible clash with the United States, while Senegal exit the tournament after letting a commanding lead slip away in heartbreaking fashion.
