Former Arsenal and Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 41, bringing an unforgettable career spanning more than two decades to a close. Widely admired for his exceptional vision, technical ability, and resilience, Cazorla leaves the game as one of Spain’s most respected midfielders.
The experienced playmaker ended his career with his childhood club Real Oviedo, helping the team earn promotion to La Liga in 2025 before competing in Spain’s top division during his final season. His farewell carried special meaning because it came at the club where his football journey first began.
In an emotional message shared on social media, Cazorla reflected on his career and expressed gratitude for finishing where it all started. He said that returning home to conclude his playing days made every challenge and achievement feel complete.
After progressing through Oviedo’s youth academy, Cazorla built an impressive career with Villarreal, Recreativo, and Malaga before joining Arsenal in 2012. During his six successful seasons in England, he became a fan favorite thanks to his creativity, intelligence, and remarkable ability to control matches. He also helped Arsenal lift the FA Cup in both 2014 and 2015.
On the international stage, Cazorla represented Spain with distinction, winning the UEFA European Championship in 2008 and 2012. Although injuries prevented him from taking part in Spain’s victorious 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign, he remained an important figure for the national team whenever fit.
Following his departure from Arsenal, Cazorla returned to Villarreal before enjoying a spell with Al Sadd in Qatar. In 2023, he made an emotional return to Real Oviedo. Demonstrating his love for the club, he accepted the league’s minimum salary and donated his image rights to support the team’s future. He also requested that a portion of his shirt sales be invested in the club’s youth academy, ensuring young talents continue to benefit from his legacy.
