Pakistan’s automobile market may soon experience some changes in vehicle pricing after the government introduced its new auto policy and fresh budget measures. Industry experts believe this could bring short-term relief for buyers, but the long-term effects are still uncertain.
Auto sector analyst Mushhood Ali Khan explained that tax reductions in the latest budget may help lower the prices of certain vehicles. However, he noted that the real benefit depends on whether car manufacturers and importers pass those savings on to customers.
He emphasized that Pakistan’s economy gains more from local auto parts manufacturing than from simple vehicle assembly. In the past, major automobile companies invested heavily in local vendor networks, which helped small and medium-sized businesses produce parts within the country.
According to Khan, many newer automotive brands have focused mostly on assembling imported components instead of strengthening local manufacturing. This trend, he warned, could create problems for domestic industries in the future.
He also raised concerns about the proposed five-year tariff policy, saying that reduced protection for local manufacturers could damage Pakistan’s parts industry. If local factories struggle to compete, it may result in factory closures and job losses.
On the possibility of affordable vehicles priced between Rs2 million and Rs2.5 million, Khan said such pricing is possible. He referred to examples from China, where low-cost vehicles are available. However, he clarified that lower prices often mean fewer features and simpler specifications.
He further explained that most Pakistani buyers still trust petrol-powered vehicles, while the shift toward electric vehicles remains slow. At present, EV buyers mainly belong to higher-income groups who already own petrol or hybrid cars.
