Pakistan Peoples Party leader Amjad Hussain has been elected unopposed as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, becoming the fifth person to hold the province’s top executive office since the region received its current governance structure.
No other candidate submitted nomination papers for the chief minister’s post, paving the way for Hussain’s uncontested election. He was recently elected from the GBA-1 constituency in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections and currently serves as the president of the PPP chapter in the region.
The development follows another significant milestone in the newly formed assembly, where PPP’s Imran Nadeem was elected unopposed as Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, while PML-N’s Malik Kifayat ur Rehman secured the position of Deputy Speaker without facing any competition. Both leaders assumed office after no rival candidates filed nomination papers before the deadline.
Members of the assembly and senior political figures extended congratulations to the newly elected office-bearers, expressing confidence that they would uphold democratic values and ensure the smooth functioning of legislative proceedings.
Earlier, the newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly took oath in a ceremony administered by the outgoing speaker, officially marking the beginning of the new parliamentary term.
The political landscape in Gilgit-Baltistan shifted following the June 7 elections, in which the PPP emerged as the largest party with 13 seats. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured nine seats, while the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) won six seats. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and a PTI-backed independent candidate each managed to win one seat.
Ahead of the elections for chief minister, speaker, and deputy speaker, the PML-N and IPP announced their support for the PPP, enabling the party to comfortably form a coalition government in Gilgit-Baltistan and strengthen political cooperation among allied parties in the region.
