Punjab Assembly has taken a strong step to protect children by passing a resolution that seeks a complete ban on social media accounts for those under 16 years of age. The resolution was presented by treasury lawmaker Sarah Ahmad and received support in the House on Tuesday.
The move calls on the federal government to introduce effective legal measures that prevent children below 16 from creating or using social media accounts. Any exception would require clear consent from parents or legal guardians along with reliable age verification systems. Lawmakers stressed that the state holds full responsibility for safeguarding the physical, mental, psychological and moral development of children.
According to the resolution, inappropriate content widely available on social media platforms is putting young minds under serious mental stress and exposing them to multiple risks. These platforms often fail to filter harmful material, leaving children vulnerable to cyberbullying, exploitation and negative influences that can affect their overall growth.
The House recommended that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority must require every social media company to install strong age-verification tools. Platforms should strictly follow child protection standards, quickly remove or restrict harmful content, and create a safer online space for minors. Continuous awareness campaigns by federal and provincial institutions were also urged so that parents, teachers and children understand digital safety and responsible internet use.
A coordinated system between different levels of government, supported by clear legislation, is essential to ensure proper online protection for children. The resolution highlights that without timely action, the growing digital exposure of young users will continue to harm their well-being.
By approving this measure, the Punjab Assembly has sent a clear message that child safety online is a priority.
