The United States and Iran returned to open conflict on Wednesday after weeks of relative calm. Washington carried out a major wave of strikes while Tehran claimed a US attack killed five people and wounded dozens at a wedding celebration.
US Central Command confirmed it hit multiple Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets on Tuesday. The strikes focused on air defense systems, radar sites, maritime assets, mine laying equipment, and communication facilities. Iranian media reported several attacks near the Strait of Hormuz, an area where Iran has previously threatened oil tankers.
Iran responded by launching strikes against US positions. Official statements said Iranian forces hit targets in Jordan and Iraq. Iranian media also claimed attacks in Bahrain. The IRGC said it caused heavy American casualties in Jordan, yet two US officials told Reuters that early assessments showed no American deaths. Jordan’s military reported intercepting most of 13 ballistic missiles that entered its airspace. Bahrain confirmed it destroyed several Iranian drones.
The IRGC further claimed combined missile and drone attacks on US bases in Erbil, northern Iraq. Neither Iraq nor the United States has confirmed those reports.
This exchange ended a period of restraint that began in July. Both sides had held back fire while showing little interest in talks. Iran’s economy has suffered heavily under the strain of war, and its conventional forces have taken serious damage. On the American side, stockpiles of long range precision missiles have dropped sharply, according to earlier reports.
President Donald Trump welcomed the current position, saying the United States now holds almost total control of the Hormuz Strait while Iran’s economy collapses. He asked when the Iranian people would rise up. Iran’s joint military command issued a strong warning, saying any continued American actions would bring heavier and more widespread responses. Countries cooperating with US forces, it added, would face serious consequences.
In one of the most serious civilian incidents reported, the Iranian Red Crescent said five people died and around fifty were wounded when a strike hit a wedding near Sirik on the Strait of Hormuz. Reports mentioned a four year old child among the dead. Iran’s foreign ministry called the attack part of a pattern of cruelty and promised a firm reply. US officials have not yet commented on the wedding incident.
The renewed US Iran attacks show that the temporary lull has ended and both sides remain ready for further escalation.
