Seattle Mass Shooting Leaves Three Dead and Four Injured
A mass shooting near the iconic Space Needle in Seattle claimed three lives on Sunday and left at least four people wounded, including a young child. The violence erupted during the popular Bite of Seattle food festival, a summer event that draws large crowds to the city’s well-known tourist area.
Seattle Police reported that shots rang out around 6:00 pm local time. Assistant Police Chief Tyrone Davis explained that two individuals appeared to be shooting at each other. Officers recovered two weapons at the scene. One suspect was quickly taken into custody while police continued searching for a second person. Authorities confirmed there is currently no outstanding threat to the wider community.
Mayor Katie Wilson described the incident as an act of horrific violence. She said the city’s focus must remain on those whose lives were lost, the people still fighting to recover, and the families standing beside them. The mayor also thanked Seattle police officers for their rapid response and for placing one suspect under arrest.
Four patients were taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. According to hospital spokesperson Susan Gregg, the injured included a child, a woman of unknown age who underwent surgery, a 23-year-old man, and a 39-year-old woman. Police later stated that all those in hospital were in stable condition.
Witnesses described the sudden chaos. Several people told local media they initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks before the crowd began running in panic. One witness said everyone flooded past him as people fled the area. Another recalled hearing multiple shots and simply running without looking back.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson said State Patrol SWAT officers were sent to support local police. He offered prayers for the victims’ families and for the responders working to keep people safe.
The Seattle Center, home to the Space Needle and the site of the food festival celebrating local businesses and vendors, became the scene of sudden tragedy. Police and city leaders have stressed that the immediate danger has been contained while investigations continue.
