The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9 at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo. The prestigious award recognizes individuals or organizations that make significant contributions to international peace, but the selection process remains highly confidential.

This year, 287 candidates have reportedly been nominated, including 208 individuals and 79 organizations. However, the official nomination list remains secret for 50 years. Nominators can publicly reveal their choices, but the Nobel Committee itself does not disclose the full list.

Several names and organizations have emerged as possible contenders. Among those mentioned are Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, Francesca Albanese, and humanitarian groups working in conflict zones. Emergency Response Rooms in Sudan and Save the Children have also been discussed as potential candidates.

The prize is decided by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which consists of five members appointed by Norway’s parliament. The committee reviews nominations, creates a shortlist and then examines candidates with help from permanent advisers and independent experts.

The award criteria are based on Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will. Nobel said the prize should honor those who have done the most to promote fellowship between nations, reduce standing armies and encourage peace efforts.

However, the committee also considers current global developments when evaluating candidates. Members meet regularly throughout the year, with the final decision generally made in August or September. The committee normally seeks consensus, but a majority vote is used if members cannot agree.

The eventual Nobel Peace Prize laureate receives a gold medal, diploma and a financial award of 12 million Swedish crowns, along with worldwide recognition.

The winner will be announced in Oslo on October 9, while the award ceremony will take place at Oslo City Hall on December 10, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
