A four-member medical board examined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail on August 10, according to a medical report that surfaced. The assessment included Dr Farqad Alamgir, who was reportedly called from London, along with Dr Arif Khan, Dr Akhtar Ali Bandesha and Dr Ali Arif. The board had been constituted by the federal government.
The report recorded Khan’s anxiety level at three-plus and recommended a daily one-hour walk to help manage his blood pressure and anxiety. Doctors also suggested access to newspapers, television and books, along with more frequent meetings with family members and his wife. These recommendations were aimed at providing mental relief during detention.
Khan’s blood pressure was recorded at 140/80, while his pulse was 54 beats per minute during the August 10 examination. The report stated that he did not complain of chest pain, heaviness, shortness of breath or palpitations. His ECG was reported as normal, while the examination found his heart valves and chambers to be normal.
The examination followed an August 1 check-up by Dr Bandesha, when Khan reported blood pressure fluctuations, headaches and anxiety. His blood pressure was then recorded at 140/100, with a pulse of 50 beats per minute.
The medical report comes amid continuing concerns over Khan’s access to specialist treatment. An Adiala Jail report submitted to the Supreme Court said he had undergone 39 medical examinations by different specialists between November 2023 and August 10, 2026. It also said his affected eye had almost regained normal vision after treatment for central retinal vein occlusion.
The Supreme Court later ordered that Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for assessment. The government instead took him to PIMS, citing security concerns. Doctors there examined him before he was returned to Adiala Jail.
PTI Information Secretary Waqas Akram has raised concerns about specialist access and called for Khan to be shifted to Shifa, with greater access for his family, lawyers and personal physicians. These remain PTI’s stated concerns, while government authorities have maintained that Khan received medical examinations and treatment.
