Mexico national football team ended a 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory after defeating Ecuador national football team 2-0 in the Round of 32 at Estadio Azteca. The historic win sends Mexico into the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 and marks their first knockout triumph since the 1986 World Cup.
The match began with a one-hour delay due to heavy thunderstorms, but that did not stop over 80,000 passionate fans from creating an electric atmosphere inside the iconic stadium. Mexico started strongly and looked dangerous from the opening minutes.
The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when Julián Quiñones finished brilliantly after a precise pass from Roberto Alvarado. The goal sent the home crowd into celebration and gave Mexico the momentum they needed.
Just nine minutes later, veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead with a powerful strike after combining well with Quiñones. The goal marked his 47th international goal, bringing him closer to the national scoring record.
Ecuador tried to respond, with John Yeboah creating one of their best chances, but Mexico’s goalkeeper Raúl Rangel made an important save to keep the clean sheet intact.
Mexico’s defense remained solid throughout the match, continuing their impressive record of not conceding a goal in the tournament so far. Late frustration for Ecuador saw defender Piero Hincapié shown a red card.
The victory keeps Mexico’s World Cup dream alive as they prepare for their next challenge against either England national football team or DR Congo national football team in the Round of 16.
