PIMS confirms Shifa specialists joined Imran Khan eye exam but keeps full medical report confidential

Two specialists from Shifa International Hospital took part in the eye examination of PTI founder Imran Khan at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. Hospital officials shared this detail on Saturday while refusing to reveal any other parts of the confidential medical report.

Authorities brought Imran Khan to PIMS during the night between 20 and 21 August for examination and treatment. PIMS specialists handled the remaining medical checks. Doctors later formed a medical board that finalized his fitness report after reviewing the eye exam results together with other test findings.

The hospital administration cited patient confidentiality and Supreme Court directions as the reason for not sharing the report details. Three days earlier the Supreme Court had ordered authorities to shift Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital within two days for a full check-up that would include his personal physician.

Instead the government took him to PIMS. Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar later stated that a team of doctors including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician examined him and found him completely healthy. Officials returned Imran Khan to Adiala Jail early in the morning.

PTI leaders immediately called the move a clear violation of the court order. They announced plans to file a contempt petition. Party figures said the order required Imran Khan to stay under medical supervision until at least mid-September. His sister Uzma Khan, who was present during the exam, told reporters that her brother is being tortured repeatedly in prison and that he still had a patch on one eye yet appeared stable.

Officials explained the change of hospital by pointing to security concerns created by PTI workers along the planned route. PTI rejected this explanation and insisted both the venue change and the absence of his personal physician amounted to contempt of court. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi described the episode as open defiance of the judges.

Imran Khan has remained in prison since August 2023. His lawyers maintain that his health has declined and that he has lost significant vision in his right eye. The government continues to state that available medical reports show no condition needing urgent hospital treatment. Supporters had lined Islamabad streets overnight in the hope of seeing him, and PTI now says the events have increased pressure for the protest march planned for 27 September.
