The Karachi Traffic Police has introduced a new plan to improve traffic flow and enforce lane discipline on one of the city’s busiest roads, Sharea Faisal. According to officials, this initiative will require motorbikes, rickshaws, buses, and other light transport vehicles to use designated lanes, while faster vehicles like cars will occupy separate lanes.

The decision was announced by DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah, who explained that the plan will first be implemented on Sharea Faisal due to its existing surveillance camera system. These cameras will play a key role in monitoring violations and issuing e-tickets directly to offenders.

To ensure a smooth transition, authorities will launch a one-month awareness campaign before strict enforcement begins on June 1. During this period, commuters will be educated about the new rules and how to follow proper lane usage. After the awareness phase, strict action will be taken against violators.

Under the new system, motorbikes and rickshaws must stay within the two leftmost lanes, along with other light transport vehicles such as Mazdas. The remaining lanes, which vary between two and three depending on the road section, will be reserved for faster-moving traffic like private cars and double cabin vehicles.

The authorities have also set specific fine amounts for violations. Motorbike riders and rickshaw drivers who fail to follow the rules will face a fine of Rs2,500, while bus drivers will be fined Rs7,500. These penalties aim to encourage compliance and reduce reckless driving behavior.

Officials believe this structured approach will significantly improve traffic management in Karachi. By separating slow and fast vehicles, the initiative is expected to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and bring long-awaited discipline to urban traffic.
