At least five people lost their lives and 27 others were injured when a passenger bus plunged into a drain in Hafizabad on Thursday. The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers of reckless driving on Punjab’s roads.

According to Rescue 1122 officials, the bus was travelling from Raiwind to Chiniot when it suddenly went off the road and fell into a drain near a flyover in Hafizabad. Rescue teams reached the site quickly and started recovery operations. They pulled passengers out of the damaged vehicle and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials said the main reason behind the crash appeared to be overspeeding.

Local authorities confirmed that five passengers died at the scene or while being taken to hospital. The condition of several injured people remains critical, though full details about the victims have not been released yet. Families of the passengers are gathering at hospitals, waiting for updates and hoping for the best.

This is not the first time such an accident has taken place in the region. Earlier this year in June 2026, seven people were hurt when a speeding passenger van fell into a canal near Dharampura-Chaubcha Phatak in Lahore. In August 2022, another serious crash occurred near Solangi Kharl on the outskirts of Jalalpur Bhattian in the same Hafizabad district. In that case, seven people died and 24 others were injured after a bus fell into a pond. Rescue teams had also blamed high speed for that accident.

Punjab Traffic Police regularly reminds drivers of buses and trucks to follow speed limits, keep their vehicles in good condition, and avoid overloading. Despite these guidelines, overspeeding continues to cause many road tragedies across the province. Experts say better enforcement of traffic rules and stricter checks on passenger vehicles could help reduce such incidents.

Rescue officials are still working at the site and collecting more information. The exact number of passengers on the bus and the full list of victims will be shared once the investigation moves forward. For now, the focus remains on treating the injured and supporting the families of those who lost their lives in this Hafizabad bus crash.

Road safety remains a serious concern in Pakistan, and every accident like this serves as a painful reminder that lives can be saved if drivers simply slow down and follow the rules.
