The FIFA World Cup 2026 delivered another dramatic day as France and Spain secured top spots in their respective groups, while two time world champions Uruguay suffered a shocking group stage exit. Cape Verde celebrated a historic achievement by reaching the knockout stage in their first ever World Cup appearance, and Senegal kept their qualification hopes alive with a dominant victory over Iraq.

France finished as Group I winners after an impressive 4 to 1 victory over Norway. Ousmane Dembele stole the spotlight with a brilliant first half hat trick, scoring three goals within the opening 32 minutes. Norway briefly responded through Thelo Aasgaard, but Dembele restored France’s control before Desire Doue added another goal in stoppage time. Norway also missed an opportunity to reduce the deficit after Jorgen Strand Larsen failed to convert a penalty. The win ensured France maintained a perfect group stage record.

In another crucial match, Senegal defeated Iraq 5 to 0, collecting their first victory of the tournament. The commanding result significantly boosted their goal difference, although their chances of reaching the last 32 now depend on results from other groups and the ranking of third placed teams.

Meanwhile, Spain secured first place in Group H with a narrow 1 to 0 victory over Uruguay. Midfielder Alex Baena scored the decisive goal shortly before halftime after veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to stop a routine effort. Spain remained unbeaten in 34 competitive matches and have yet to concede a goal in the tournament, strengthening their reputation as one of the strongest defensive teams.

Uruguay’s defeat officially ended their World Cup journey after managing only two draws and one loss during the group stage. The result also confirmed Cape Verde’s place in the last 32 after they held Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw. The World Cup debutants finished second in Group H and will now face defending champions Argentina in a historic knockout clash.
