A dramatic incident unfolded in Beijing on Friday when plane debris was spotted at the base of the city’s tallest skyscraper, the 528-metre CITIC Tower. Eyewitnesses and AFP journalists reported flames, emergency response, and visible damage to the iconic building, also known as China Zun.

Video footage captured from a nearby building showed fire trucks spraying water at flames on the ground in front of the tower. Debris that appeared to be parts of a small plane was lying near the structure. Journalists at the scene observed a noticeable hole in the windows on one of the upper floors of the 108-storey building.

Police, ambulances, and emergency services quickly swarmed the area around the CITIC Tower. Officers cordoned off the zone while dozens of uniformed cleaners gathered nearby. One worker inside the building described seeing debris on his way out, confirming it looked like aircraft parts. A finance professional who witnessed the event said, “I don’t know why the plane would fly in here. It really is quite strange.”

Evacuation efforts were underway, with one woman recounting how she ran down dozens of floors using the stairs after being instructed not to use the elevators. Property management staff later told workers to go home as access to the building was restricted.

The CITIC Tower can accommodate up to 12,000 office workers and stands as a major landmark in Beijing. China maintains very strict control over its airspace, especially in the capital region. The incident has left many residents shocked, with one onlooker saying, “This kind of thing wouldn’t happen in Beijing… It’s pretty common abroad, but in China, it shouldn’t happen.”

Authorities have not yet released an official statement about the cause of the crash or any possible casualties. Aviation enthusiasts also rushed to the scene after reports spread rapidly on social media. The event has raised questions about airspace security in one of the world’s most tightly controlled capitals.
