At least seven people were martyred and three others sustained injuries in two consecutive explosions that struck the Merka Bera area of Bannu on Saturday, according to local police officials.

District Police Officer Yasir Afridi stated that the first blast occurred when explosives planted along a roadside detonated as a passenger van was travelling from Hathi Khel village to Bannu city. The powerful explosion hit the vehicle directly, resulting in the martyrdom of five passengers on the spot.

Shortly after the initial explosion, a second blast took place at the same location. Authorities said the second explosion targeted individuals involved in rescue efforts following the first attack. Two people participating in the rescue operation embraced martyrdom, while another vehicle parked nearby was damaged. Three individuals suffered injuries and were rushed to medical facilities for treatment.

The deceased and injured victims were shifted to Khalifa Gul Nawaz Teaching Hospital, where medical treatment and legal procedures were completed. Security personnel quickly cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to determine the nature of the attack and identify those responsible.

The tragic incident comes amid continuing security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militant violence has increased in recent years. Bannu has witnessed several attacks targeting civilians and security personnel. Earlier this year, a suicide attack in the district claimed the lives of five people, including women and a child.

Security agencies have intensified counterterrorism operations across the country, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, to counter militant activities. Officials have reiterated their commitment to eliminating terrorism and ensuring the safety of citizens. Authorities are continuing to collect evidence from the blast site, while further details regarding the attackers and their motives are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.

The twin explosions have once again highlighted the security concerns facing the region and the sacrifices made by civilians and rescue workers caught in acts of violence.
