West Bengal’s political landscape witnessed a dramatic turn after the recent state assembly elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged with a clear majority, ending years of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule. Despite the defeat, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has refused to step down, triggering intense political debate across India.

According to election results, the BJP secured more than two-thirds of the 294 assembly seats, marking a historic breakthrough in a state where it had never previously formed a government. The ruling Trinamool Congress suffered a major setback, dropping from 215 seats in the previous term to just 80. Mamata Banerjee herself also lost her constituency, further deepening the crisis for her party.

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Banerjee rejected the outcome, claiming that nearly 100 seats were forcibly taken away from her party. She also accused the Election Commission of bias, alleging irregularities in the electoral process. However, she did not present any concrete evidence to support these serious claims.

In a strong statement, Banerjee declared, “I will not resign, I did not lose morally.” She insisted that while official results favored the BJP, the true mandate of the people was different. Her remarks have sparked sharp reactions from political opponents.

The Election Commission dismissed her allegations as baseless, reaffirming the credibility of the electoral process. Meanwhile, BJP leaders stated that the results reflect the democratic will of the people and pointed out that constitutional procedures must be followed for any legal challenge.

Under Indian law, Banerjee can still challenge the results in court on grounds such as electoral malpractice or procedural violations. However, she has not confirmed whether she will pursue legal action.

As her term approaches its official end, West Bengal now stands at a crucial political crossroads, with the transition of power expected to reshape the state’s future governance and political direction
