A recent inquiry into the Karachi matric exams has exposed serious irregularities within the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK), raising concerns about fairness and transparency. According to the report, more than 170 examination centres were changed during the exams, creating confusion and distress among students.
The controversy surrounding the exams intensified after reports of paper leaks, cheating, and widespread administrative failures surfaced. Many students who had already appeared in multiple papers at assigned centres were suddenly informed that their exam centres had been shifted, often without clear explanation. This unexpected move disrupted exam schedules and added unnecessary stress for candidates.
One of the most alarming revelations was related to paper security. A Computer Science paper along with its answers was reportedly circulating on social media at least 20 minutes before the exam, indicating a serious breach in the system. This incident has raised questions about the credibility of the examination process.
The report also highlighted major security lapses at exam centres. In shocking incidents, some students were allegedly found carrying weapons inside examination halls. Additionally, poor facilities such as broken fans, load shedding, and overcrowded rooms further worsened the situation. There were also complaints about students being assigned centres far from their schools, while some institutions reportedly operated unauthorised home centres.
The inquiry committee, formed under the direction of the Sindh Boards Minister, has recommended strict action against those responsible. It called for the suspension of key officials, including the BSEK chairman and the controller of examinations, along with criminal proceedings through anti corruption authorities.
Several individuals, including officials and facilitators, have been named in the report for their alleged role in manipulating exam centres. Authorities have assured that decisions will be made based on the findings, emphasizing that no pressure or influence will be accepted.
Following the revelations, the BSEK chairman has reportedly stepped down, marking a significant development in the ongoing controversy.
