German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has downplayed any personal rift with President Donald Trump, following a series of public disagreements. Merz emphasized that while the two leaders hold differing views on international strategy, particularly regarding Iran, the United States remains a vital and indispensable partner for Berlin within the NATO alliance.

Despite the public friction, Merz strictly rejected the idea that his past criticisms of US war planning in the Middle East led to the Pentagon’s recent decision to cut 5,000 troops from Germany. He noted that Trump has consistently pushed for a reduced military footprint in Europe since his first term, urging European nations to take greater responsibility for their own security and defense.

The reduction is also seen as the end of a Biden-era plan to station a US battalion equipped with long-range Tomahawk missiles in Germany. This move is viewed as a significant setback for Berlin, which had relied on the deployment as a primary deterrent against Russia. Merz clarified that Trump had never formally committed to the missile plan and suggested that the US currently lacks sufficient systems to spare for such a deployment.
