The long-awaited return of cricket to the Olympic Games after 128 years took a major step forward as construction began on the new Los Angeles 2028 cricket venue. The groundbreaking ceremony, which took place at the Fairplex Grounds in Pomona, Los Angeles County, was attended by International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah and other senior officials.
“This is an important milestone in cricket’s return to the Olympics, and it fills us with pride and excitement,” said Shah. He emphasized that the sport’s inclusion in the Olympic Games marks a key step in expanding cricket’s global reach.
ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta added that the 2028 Olympic Games would be a significant opportunity for cricket to expand beyond its traditional strongholds, drawing more fans and participants from across the world. He noted that the sport has seen substantial growth in participation globally, which is a key factor in the decision to include it in the Los Angeles Games.
The ICC sees cricket at the Olympics as a chance to inspire the next generation and grow the sport in new regions, making it more accessible to youth worldwide. The T20 format will be used for both men’s and women’s competitions, showcasing the fast-paced nature of the sport.
The event also marks a critical moment in cricket’s global development, providing a platform to introduce the game to a broader audience and potentially increase its popularity outside of its traditional heartlands.
