Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply after the US Iran blockade began targeting ships departing from Iranian ports. US President Donald Trump confirmed that the military action aims to pressure Iran following the collapse of recent peace talks. In response, Tehran has issued strong warnings, threatening retaliation against key ports across the Gulf region.

The situation has already had a major global impact, with oil prices surging above $100 per barrel once again. The continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for nearly one fifth of the world’s oil supply, has intensified concerns about energy security and supply disruptions.

Since the conflict began in late February, Iran has restricted access to the strait, allowing only controlled passage under its authority. The US has now moved to block Iranian vessels and ships cooperating with Tehran, warning that any aggressive naval movement will be met with force.

Iranian officials have strongly condemned the blockade, calling it an act of piracy. Military spokespersons warned that if Iran’s ports are threatened, no port in the Gulf region will remain safe, signaling a potential widening of the conflict. The situation puts the fragile ceasefire under severe strain, with only days remaining before it expires.

Meanwhile, key NATO allies such as United Kingdom and France have chosen not to participate in the blockade, instead urging diplomatic efforts to reopen the vital shipping route.

The crisis has also extended beyond Iran, with ongoing military activity in Lebanon adding further instability to the region. Despite earlier mediation efforts led by Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, no lasting agreement has yet been achieved.

As the US Iran blockade continues, global markets remain volatile, and fears of a broader regional conflict are growing. The coming days will be critical in determining whether diplomacy can prevent further escalation.
