Pakistan is seriously considering withdrawing from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after the exclusion of Bangladesh from the tournament triggered strong concerns in Islamabad over what officials describe as unfair and discriminatory treatment by the International Cricket Council. The issue has moved beyond cricket and entered the realm of principle, governance, and equality in international sports.
According to highly placed government sources, the federal government may not grant permission to the Pakistan Cricket Board to send the national team to the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Officials believe the ICC has demonstrated clear double standards, particularly in how venue flexibility and security concerns are handled for different countries.
The controversy began when Bangladesh requested to play its matches in Sri Lanka, citing security issues. The ICC reportedly rejected this request, a decision that ultimately led to Bangladesh being replaced by Scotland. This move has caused serious unease within Pakistan’s political leadership, with officials arguing that Bangladesh was denied its legitimate sporting rights.
A decisive meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to determine Pakistan’s final position. Sources indicate that the prime minister will make the final call after reviewing the situation in detail.
Government officials have emphasized that this matter is not solely about cricket, but about ensuring fairness and neutrality in global sports administration. They argue thata single nation cannot influence sports bodiesn, and that all member countries must be treated equally. Concerns were raised over how some teams are allowed to change venues freely, while others face restrictions even after raising valid security concerns.
Mohsin Naqvi has already expressed strong dissatisfaction with the ICC’s handling of the issue, stating that the decision undermines the credibility of international cricket. However, he confirmed that the PCB will fully comply with the federal government’s directive.
Pakistan’s players have also shown unity, agreeing to support whatever decision is taken by the government. As global attention intensifies, Pakistan’s potential withdrawal could send shockwaves across international cricket, raising serious questions about governance and fairness.
