Sugar prices across Pakistan have climbed to their highest levels ever, adding more pressure on households already coping with rising living expenses. Market reports show a sharp increase in rates across major cities, with Quetta witnessing the steepest surge. Within just one week, prices in Quetta jumped by Rs. 19, reaching an alarming Rs. 229 per kilogram, the highest recorded anywhere in the country.

Other cities are also facing significant price hikes. In Peshawar, sugar is now selling for around Rs. 200 per kilogram, making it harder for families to manage their grocery budgets. Karachi and Islamabad have reported increases as well, with rates touching Rs. 195 per kilogram. Even Rawalpindi, where prices usually remain stable, has seen sugar rise to Rs. 190 per kilogram.

Despite these spikes, the national average price shows a slight drop to Rs. 185.47 per kilogram, but this provides little relief for consumers because sugar remains much costlier than last year. During the same period last year, the average rate was Rs. 132.24, highlighting how sharply prices have increased within twelve months.

Experts believe that several factors, including supply chain issues, production shortages, and market uncertainty, are contributing to the rising costs. For families, this means adjusting daily spending and making tough choices regarding food and household needs. Since sugar is used in everyday items like tea, desserts, and home cooking, the impact is felt by nearly every household.

The situation underscores the need for stronger market regulation and timely interventions to ease the financial burden on consumers.
