Imran Khan was shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences instead of Shifa International Hospital purely due to security concerns, according to Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.
Speaking on a television programme, the minister made it clear that the decision came from the federal administration and had no link with the Punjab government. He stressed that both the former prime minister’s treatment and his security carried equal weight. Officials knew the choice of Pims would spark strong reactions, yet safety remained the top priority.
Tariq Fazal Chaudhry confirmed that every medical test recommended for Imran Khan is available at Pims. Doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present during the examination, ensuring continuity of care. The government, he added, follows a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to the health and security of the PTI founder.
The remarks followed Imran Khan’s brief transfer to Pims and his return to Adiala Jail after the medical check-up. The Supreme Court had earlier ordered authorities to take him to Shifa International Hospital. PTI later filed a contempt petition, claiming the court’s directive was not followed.
Meanwhile, PTI lawyer Salman Akram Raja raised fresh worries about the former prime minister’s wellbeing. He said contact between Imran Khan and his family has been completely cut off since 2 December, a period of nearly ten months. Raja questioned whether any other prisoner has faced the same prolonged isolation and argued that the medical report should stay limited to the doctors and the family.
Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah responded by saying negotiations and dialogue are not part of PTI’s political style. He claimed the party begins and ends with its founder and that every other opposition group remains ready to talk with the government. Sanaullah also accused PTI of ignoring clear court instructions on related matters.
The episode has once again highlighted the deep political divide surrounding Imran Khan’s detention, medical care and restricted family access. While the government insists security dictated the hospital choice, the opposition continues to challenge the decision in court and raise concerns over the former premier’s health and isolation.
