Japan is preparing for the arrival of Typhoon Bavi, a powerful storm expected to bring destructive winds, torrential rainfall, and a high risk of flooding and landslides across the country’s southwestern islands. Authorities have issued warnings as the typhoon moves closer to the Sakishima Islands, raising concerns that it could become one of the region’s most severe storms in recent years.

According to weather officials, Typhoon Bavi was packing maximum sustained winds of 162 kilometers per hour (100 mph) as it approached the islands on Friday. Residents in affected areas rushed to strengthen homes and businesses by securing windows and installing protective coverings, while supermarkets reported heavy demand for emergency supplies, including bottled water and instant food.

The storm has already disrupted travel across the region. Airlines cancelled dozens of flights, including many scheduled for Saturday, while ferry services, beaches, and several coastal facilities were temporarily closed as a precaution. Local authorities urged residents and tourists to remain indoors and follow emergency safety instructions.

Neighbouring Taiwan is also preparing for the impact of Typhoon Bavi despite forecasts indicating the storm will not make direct landfall there. Financial markets were closed, schools and offices suspended operations in several regions, and authorities evacuated more than 1,000 residents from vulnerable mountainous areas. Nearly 29,000 military personnel have been placed on standby to assist with emergency response and disaster relief.

Forecasters warned that some parts of Taiwan could receive up to one metre of rainfall, increasing the threat of flash floods and landslides. The approaching storm also affected businesses, with semiconductor giant TSMC postponing the release of its June sales report until Monday due to weather related disruptions.

After passing near Japan and Taiwan, Typhoon Bavi is expected to make landfall near the eastern Chinese city of Wenzhou late on Saturday. Authorities across the region continue to monitor the storm closely, urging residents to stay informed through official weather updates and complete preparations before conditions worsen.
