The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially announced a four team One Day tournament that will be held in August as part of its long term preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. The competition is expected to play a key role in identifying the country’s strongest white ball players and building a competitive squad well before the global event.
According to Director of High Performance Aaqib Javed, Pakistan has approximately 18 months to prepare for the next World Cup, making this the ideal time to begin shaping the team’s future. He explained that the tournament has been carefully planned by the national selectors and coaching staff to evaluate players in a highly competitive environment.
The event will feature four balanced teams, each made up of Pakistan’s leading white ball cricketers. Rather than selecting playing eleven randomly, the selectors and coaches will assign players to specific roles, allowing the management to assess combinations that could be effective at the international level.
Javed believes this structured approach will help identify a core group of players capable of representing Pakistan consistently over the coming months. Every player’s performance will be closely monitored, with all matches being broadcast live, giving selectors detailed insights into batting, bowling, fielding, and overall match awareness.
The tournament will also take place before the start of Pakistan’s domestic first class season, ensuring players receive valuable match practice while competing for a place in the national setup. The PCB hopes this initiative will strengthen competition among players and create a larger talent pool ahead of future international assignments.
Aaqib Javed also highlighted the importance of improving Pakistan’s position in the ICC ODI rankings. He stated that the national team should consistently rank among the top four ODI teams in the world, adding that anything lower would not meet expectations.
With the World Cup still some time away, the PCB is taking proactive steps to prepare early. The four team tournament is expected to provide valuable information about player form, team balance, and leadership options as Pakistan begins its journey toward the 2027 World Cup.
