India and Australia have signed a landmark uranium supply agreement, marking a major step in strengthening bilateral relations and supporting India’s growing clean energy ambitions. The agreement was finalized during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Melbourne, where he held talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Speaking after the meeting, Modi described the agreement as an important milestone that will help India secure a reliable source of uranium for expanding its nuclear energy sector. As electricity demand continues to rise across India, the government has identified nuclear power as a key component of its long term strategy to increase non fossil fuel energy production and reduce carbon emissions.

Under the agreement, Australia will supply uranium to India strictly for peaceful purposes. The exports will be monitored under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), ensuring compliance with international nuclear standards. Australia possesses nearly 28 percent of the world’s uranium reserves, making it one of the largest potential suppliers of nuclear fuel.

Beyond energy cooperation, both leaders agreed to strengthen defence collaboration, improve critical minerals supply chains, and enhance cooperation in advanced technology. The two countries also announced plans to establish a temporary space tracking terminal on Australia’s Cocos Keeling Islands, which will support India’s future space missions.

Prime Minister Albanese praised Modi’s leadership, saying that his commitment has played a vital role in transforming relations between the two nations. The leaders reaffirmed their shared vision of expanding cooperation across strategic, economic, and technological sectors.

The visit also reflects the rapidly growing ties between India and Australia, supported by a strong and expanding Indian diaspora. Recent demographic data shows that people born in India now represent Australia’s largest overseas born community, highlighting the deepening cultural and economic relationship between the two countries.

While Modi received a warm welcome from supporters during his visit, some groups also organized protests, raising concerns over domestic political issues in India. Despite these demonstrations, both governments emphasized their commitment to strengthening cooperation for regional stability, clean energy development, and long term strategic partnership.
