Switzerland created a memorable chapter in their football history after defeating Colombia 4 to 3 in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter finals. After 120 minutes of intense football ended without a goal, the Swiss held their nerve from the penalty spot to book a huge clash against defending champions Argentina.
The match at BC Place in Vancouver was filled with tension from the opening whistle. Colombia produced the first real chance when Gustavo Puerta tested Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a powerful curling effort. Kobel responded with an outstanding save to keep the scores level. Switzerland nearly replied through Fabian Rieder, but Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas denied him from a difficult angle.
Both teams continued to battle throughout normal time, creating opportunities but failing to find the breakthrough. Switzerland came closest in stoppage time when Dan Ndoye fired narrowly wide after a clever attacking run.
The drama continued in extra time as Colombia almost scored through Jhon Lucumi, whose powerful header crashed against the crossbar. With neither side able to break the deadlock, the contest was decided by penalties.
Switzerland gained the advantage after Davinson Sanchez struck the crossbar and Gregor Kobel brilliantly saved Cucho Hernandez’s penalty. Although Manuel Akanji missed for Switzerland, Ruben Vargas confidently converted the decisive spot kick, sending the Swiss players and supporters into wild celebrations.
Speaking after the victory, Vargas admitted it was difficult to believe what the team had achieved. He praised his teammates for giving everything over 120 exhausting minutes and said scoring the winning penalty was a dream moment.
The victory is particularly significant for Switzerland, who had been eliminated in the Round of 16 at the previous four World Cups. Despite missing injured young star Johan Manzambi, the Swiss finally ended that disappointing run and reached their first World Cup quarter final since 1954. They will now face Argentina in Kansas City for a place in the semi finals, while Colombia’s impressive tournament comes to a heartbreaking end.
