Cristiano Ronaldo described it as a “coincidence of life” after Portugal’s emotional 2-1 victory over Croatia in the FIFA World Cup 2026, which came almost exactly one year after the tragic death of his former teammate Diogo Jota.
Portugal secured their place in the Round of 16 in dramatic fashion, but the match carried much deeper emotions for the squad. After the final whistle, Ronaldo and his teammates gathered together to hold up Jota’s number 21 jersey, paying tribute to the late football star who passed away in a car accident last year.
Ronaldo later wore the same number 21 shirt during his post-match interviews, showing how much the moment meant to him and the entire Portuguese team.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said the timing of the victory felt unbelievable. He explained that the players had spoken before the game about how special the day was and how the anniversary of Jota’s death added emotional weight to their performance.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez also reflected on the importance of the tribute, saying it was a meaningful day for Portuguese football fans and the team.
Diogo Jota, who played for Liverpool F.C., died alongside his brother Andre Silva in a tragic car crash in Spain on July 3, 2025, while traveling back to England for pre-season training.
Earlier in the tournament, Portugal had already honored Jota by displaying his photo on the stadium’s giant screen before their opening match.
With emotions running high and their World Cup journey still alive, Portugal now prepare for a huge Round of 16 clash against Spain national football team. For Ronaldo and his teammates, the match against Croatia was more than just a victory. It was a heartfelt tribute to a teammate they still deeply remember.
