The first spell of monsoon rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has caused severe destruction across the province, leaving nine people dead and 23 injured in just 48 hours. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flash floods triggered multiple tragic incidents in several districts.

PDMA officials confirmed that at least 41 houses were damaged, with many families suffering major losses. The affected areas include Khyber, Lower Dir, Mardan, Shangla, Bajaur, Lower Chitral, and Dera Ismail Khan, where the weather conditions turned dangerous due to nonstop rainfall.

The PDMA Director General stated that district administrations have been instructed to speed up relief operations and provide immediate help to affected families. Rescue teams are working in vulnerable areas to clear roads, restore access, and assist people trapped by floodwaters.

The current weather situation has also raised concerns at the national level. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning for possible glacial lake outburst floods, landslides, and urban flooding from July 1 to July 4 in northern and central Pakistan.

Officials said that increasing temperatures, combined with active monsoon systems and westerly weather patterns, are expected to cause more heavy rainfall and accelerate glacier melting. This could create dangerous flood conditions in mountainous regions.

The NDMA has advised both local authorities and the public to remain alert and follow all safety instructions to avoid further casualties. Areas in Gilgit-Baltistan, KP, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are especially at risk due to their close proximity to glaciers.

Experts warn that changing climate patterns are making such extreme weather events more frequent, increasing the need for stronger disaster preparedness and faster emergency response systems across Pakistan.
