Ireland pulled off one of their biggest victories in T20 International cricket by defeating world champions India by 34 runs in the opening match of the two game series at Stormont, Belfast. The hosts produced an outstanding all round performance to defend a challenging total of 182 runs, while India failed to chase the target and were bowled out for 148 with seven balls remaining.

One of the biggest talking points before the match was India’s decision to leave 15 year old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi out of the playing eleven. The teenage star earned his place in the squad after an exceptional IPL season where he finished as the tournament’s highest run scorer with 776 runs, including one century and five half centuries for the Rajasthan Royals. However, India chose experience over youth, and the move did not produce the desired result.

India struggled throughout the chase despite a promising start from Abhishek Sharma, who top scored with 49 runs. Shivam Dube contributed 25, but the rest of the batting lineup failed to build meaningful partnerships against Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack.

The home side’s bowlers kept the pressure on from the beginning. Matt Hollard claimed three wickets for 28 runs, while left arm spinner Matthew Humphreys also picked up three wickets, removing key Indian batters at crucial moments. Their impressive spells ensured Ireland secured a memorable victory over the defending world champions.

Earlier, Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker led from the front with a valuable 50, while Gareth Delany narrowly missed a half century after scoring 49. Their contributions helped Ireland post a competitive 182 for 9 from 20 overs.

The historic win marked Ireland’s first ever victory over India in any format, giving them a valuable confidence boost ahead of the second and final T20 International, which will also be played in Belfast on Sunday.
