In a bold and carefully executed operation, UK naval commandos have successfully intercepted a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the English Channel. The dramatic six-hour mission has been praised by Ukrainian officials as a significant blow to Russia’s efforts to fund its ongoing war.

The vessel, identified as the CMR Smyrtos, was sailing under a false Cameroonian flag when British forces boarded it. Royal Marine Commandos fast-roped from a helicopter under the cover of darkness, supported by Chinook, Merlin Mk4, and Wildcat helicopters, along with a maritime patrol aircraft. The frigate HMS Sutherland and minehunter HMS Ledbury also played key roles in the operation.

“This is the first UK-led operation of its kind,” the UK Defence Ministry stated. The ship has now been moved to an anchorage off the south coast of England for further monitoring. The interception was carried out in close coordination with French authorities.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga welcomed the news, saying, “Russia’s shadow fleet is a tool of war. Every such vessel stopped means less money for Russia’s war machine.” He emphasized that disrupting these vessels reduces Russia’s ability to finance missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.

UK Defence Minister Dan Jarvis described the operation as a direct strike against Putin’s illegal war. “Disrupting the shadow fleet is bearing down on the resources sustaining Russia’s aggression in Ukraine,” he added. Prime Minister Keir Starmer also hailed the success, stating it delivers “yet another blow to Russia” and sends a clear message to those supporting the conflict.

The Russian shadow fleet consists of ageing tankers with opaque ownership used to bypass Western sanctions imposed after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. These vessels are banned from UK ports and services. The UK has sanctioned hundreds of such ships and recently announced plans to board and seize them in British waters.

This latest action is part of a broader international effort. Several European nations, including France, Belgium, and Finland, have taken similar steps against sanction-busting tankers. Experts link the shadow fleet to “hybrid war” tactics, including suspected damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea.

The successful interception highlights growing Western resolve to cut off funding for Russia’s military activities while strengthening cooperation among allies.
