Pakistan has urged the United Nations to make mediation and preventive diplomacy the primary tools for resolving international disputes before conflicts escalate into major crises. Speaking during a UN General Debate on strengthening mediation, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized that preventing conflicts should be a global priority rather than responding only after violence has erupted.

The ambassador stated that the peaceful settlement of disputes remains a key pillar of Pakistan’s foreign policy and aligns with the principles outlined in the UN Charter. He stressed that successful diplomacy depends on timely dialogue, proactive engagement, and effective mediation efforts that address tensions before they turn into armed confrontations.

Highlighting the importance of mediation, Ambassador Ahmad described it as a bridge between conflict and peace, allowing nations to replace force with dialogue and cooperation. He noted that many conflicts emerge when diplomacy is delayed and communication channels are ignored.

The envoy also referred to UN Security Council Resolution 2788, which was introduced by Pakistan and unanimously adopted in July 2025. The resolution encourages the use of mediation, diplomatic engagement, and cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations to peacefully resolve disputes.

Discussing the recent tensions in the Middle East, Ambassador Ahmad pointed out Pakistan’s balanced diplomatic relationships with Iran, Gulf countries, and the United States. He said Pakistan continues to support efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.

Pakistan also proposed several measures to strengthen international mediation, including improved early warning systems, enhanced preventive diplomacy, stronger support for the UN mediation framework, predictable funding mechanisms, and greater adherence to international law.

In a separate address to the UN Security Council, the ambassador expressed concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Lebanon. He warned that ongoing violence, displacement, and civilian suffering require urgent international attention. Pakistan called for renewed diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and protect civilians affected by the conflict.

The statement reinforces Pakistan’s commitment to promoting dialogue, mediation, and peaceful conflict resolution as essential tools for maintaining international peace and security.
