The Islamabad Capital Territory Administration has introduced new business operating hours as part of a broader energy conservation plan aimed at reducing electricity consumption in the federal capital. The decision comes amid rising fuel costs and growing concerns over energy supply challenges linked to tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in global fuel markets.
Under the latest notification, all major markets, shopping malls, and commercial centres in Islamabad are now required to close by 8pm. The revised schedule took effect on June 1, 2026, and is intended to help lower electricity demand during peak consumption hours.
Authorities have clarified that several essential services will remain exempt from these restrictions. Hospitals, pharmacies, and medical stores will continue operating according to their normal schedules to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare services. Similarly, petrol pumps and CNG stations will remain open without any changes to their business hours.
The notification also outlines specific closing times for food and retail businesses. Restaurants, food outlets, tandoors, grocery stores, bakeries, and fruit and vegetable shops must close by 10pm. In addition, wedding halls, marquees, and event lawns have been directed to end operations by the same deadline.
Government officials say the initiative is part of a wider strategy to improve energy efficiency, manage electricity demand, and reduce pressure on the national power system. Pakistan relies heavily on imported fossil fuels, including liquefied natural gas, making the country vulnerable to fluctuations in global energy prices.
In recent months, authorities had temporarily relaxed business hour restrictions to support economic activity. However, increasing fuel prices and renewed concerns about energy management have prompted the reintroduction of stricter conservation measures in certain areas, including Islamabad.
Officials believe the new policy will contribute to lower energy consumption while maintaining essential commercial and public services. Residents and business owners have been advised to comply with the revised timings as the government continues efforts to address energy challenges and ensure sustainable electricity usage across the capital.
