India expressed concerns over recent US visa restrictions during the visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, although both countries continued to highlight their strong strategic partnership. Rubio arrived in India for a four day diplomatic trip and described New Delhi as one of Washington’s most important global allies.

During a joint press conference, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar acknowledged that India and the United States share common interests on several major international issues. However, he openly addressed growing worries regarding stricter US immigration policies affecting Indian citizens.

Jaishankar emphasized that while India supports efforts to curb illegal immigration, genuine travelers and skilled professionals should not suffer because of tougher visa rules. He noted that legal mobility remains essential for cooperation in the technology and business sectors between the two nations.

The concern mainly revolves around the H 1B visa program, which is widely used by Indian technology professionals working in the United States. Recent policy changes under President Donald Trump have increased restrictions and fees for these visas, leading to a significant decline in applications.

Rubio defended the immigration reforms, saying the measures were not targeted specifically at India. He explained that the United States was dealing with a broader migration crisis. Responding to racist remarks made by some critics against Indian immigrants, Rubio stated that “every country in the world has stupid people” and praised the contribution of immigrants to American society.

Despite disagreements over immigration, Rubio stressed that both democracies remain aligned on major global challenges. He highlighted shared democratic values and growing cooperation in security, trade and technology.

Relations between the two countries have recently faced pressure because of trade disputes, regional tensions and changing US foreign policy priorities. Still, both sides signaled their intention to maintain strong diplomatic and strategic ties in the years ahead.
