Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has once again become the center of attention after reports emerged that he has officially obtained British citizenship, potentially opening the door for him to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The development created excitement among cricket fans, especially after Amir reshared an Instagram post hinting at the approval of his UK nationality.
The 34 year old left arm pacer had previously discussed the possibility of playing in the IPL if he became eligible through British citizenship. Amir acquired UK nationality after marrying British citizen Narjis Khan, which could now allow him to participate in overseas franchise leagues without restrictions linked to Pakistani nationality.
Amir has always remained one of Pakistan’s most talented fast bowlers. He played a major role in Pakistan’s victories during the 2009 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. Despite becoming eligible to represent England, Amir earlier clarified that he has no plans to play international cricket for another country and remains committed to Pakistan cricket.
During an appearance on Geo News programme “Haarna Mana Hai” last year, Amir openly stated that he would happily play in the IPL if given the opportunity. He also revealed his interest in joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru, saying the franchise would be an exciting option for him. Former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad also supported the idea and said Amir’s experience could strengthen RCB’s bowling attack.
Pakistani players have not featured in the IPL since the inaugural 2008 season because of political tensions between Pakistan and India. Former all rounder Azhar Mahmood remains the only Pakistan born player to appear in the IPL after obtaining British citizenship.
Amir’s latest development has now reignited debate over whether fans could finally see another Pakistan born cricketer return to the IPL stage in the coming seasons.
