Cristiano Ronaldo is once again ready to lead Portugal on football’s biggest stage after being named in the country’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Portugal coach Roberto Martinez confirmed the selection of the veteran striker, who is now set to make history by appearing in a record sixth World Cup tournament.
At 41 years old, Ronaldo continues to prove his importance for both club and country. The legendary forward, currently playing for Al Nassr, remains the highest scoring player in men’s international football with 143 goals for Portugal. Despite his age, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United superstar still plays a major role in Portugal’s attacking lineup.
Football fans around the world are also excited about the possibility of another showdown between Ronaldo and longtime rival Lionel Messi. Messi is also expected to feature in his sixth World Cup after helping Argentina win the trophy in Qatar four years ago. The two icons have dominated world football for nearly two decades, and this tournament could mark their final appearance on the global stage.
Portugal’s squad includes several world class stars from Europe’s top clubs. Midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva will provide creativity, while Paris Saint Germain talents Vitinha, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes and Goncalo Ramos add depth and quality across the team.
Coach Martinez selected a balanced 27 man squad with very few surprises. Ronaldo’s Al Nassr teammate Joao Felix also earned a place in the squad, while experienced defenders Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo strengthen the backline.
Before the World Cup begins, Portugal will play friendly matches against Chile and Nigeria. Their World Cup campaign starts against DR Congo on June 17, followed by Group K matches against Uzbekistan and Colombia.
