The United States and China are moving toward stronger economic cooperation after a new agreement was announced involving billions of dollars in agricultural trade. According to the White House, China has agreed to purchase at least $17 billion worth of US agricultural products annually during 2026, 2027, and 2028.
The announcement followed recent meetings between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both sides discussed improving trade relations after years of tariff disputes and economic tensions. The White House described the agreement as a major step toward rebuilding trust between the world’s two largest economies.
Officials stated that the new commitment does not include earlier soybean agreements made by China in 2025. Agricultural trade between the two countries had dropped sharply after previous tariff battles severely damaged exports. According to US Department of Agriculture data, American agricultural exports to China fell by more than 65% in 2025, reaching only $8.4 billion.
Over the past several years, China has also reduced its dependence on American farm goods. In 2016, around 41% of China’s soybean imports came from the United States. By 2024, that number had fallen to nearly 20%, showing how trade tensions changed global supply chains.
Under the latest agreement, China will also cooperate with US regulators to restore imports of American poultry and lift restrictions placed on some US beef facilities. These measures are expected to benefit American farmers and food exporters who have struggled with declining demand from China.
Both countries also plan to establish a US China Board of Trade and a US China Board of Investment. The purpose of these new boards will be to solve market access issues, strengthen agricultural trade, and improve business cooperation under a reciprocal tariff reduction framework.
The agreement is being viewed as an important development that could stabilize global trade and create new opportunities for farmers, exporters, and investors in both nations.
